honestly

i just don't give a crap if US Track riders compete internationally.

dunno why, but i find the uber-goliath track beasts that do their thing in Europe to be ... unpalatable.

With Marion Jones finally admitting sins ... after her "oh, i'm so persecuted and never, EVER took performance enhancers..." and all the euro-douches getting caught, then not caught, then accused, then suing whoever ...

personally, i'm just not that interested in investing a lot of attention or love to anything but local yokels stringing out the pack at speeds 10% less than UCI WorldCups.

i want clean, pure racing ... even if it's "slow." I'm sick of greedy fuks taking steroids and epo and shooting HGH into their eyeballs, or whatever else they do.

i want playground antics, eyes revealing clear consciences, and fierce competition.

honestly.

but, i'll still watch the car wrecks. and comment. i mean, what else you gonna do?

Olaf - I agree 100%. It's good to see guys racing hard, even if they're not making the qualifying times. The Federations wonder why riders dope - gee, you set an impossibly high standard (BJM can't make it????) and don't think riders will do whatever it takes to make the cut? Crazy. Maybe someday we'll have doping controls that work and labs we can trust. Until then, I'll just sit back and enjoy the scribbles from guys like you - it certainly is a great way to spend my coffee/lunch/snack break.

V.H. knows I'm down but we want to watch the comments like:

"The Federations wonder why riders dope - gee, you set an impossibly high standard (BJM can't make it????) and don't think riders will do whatever it takes to make the cut?"

when we currently have US track riders that are competitive on the world level...even a world champion. Are you implying they are competing with some "assistance".

Beautifully put! A sweet, sweet pill for my bitterness! Go locals! I was just thinking about you, I mean this, in the shower this morning....

"i want playground antics, eyes revealing clear consciences...." Amen!

I'm not implying that anybody's doping (innocent until proven guilty in my book), though I see how the implication may be made. My point is that it should not be a surprise that doping takes place when the standards are set so high that some very talented folks (BJM is simply an example I can relate to - I've seen him ride and his results speak volumes - 2nd on NRC points even after missing several races) can't reach them. Since there are riders who can achieve these standards, why aren't they competing down in LoCal right now? I'd love to see them match up against our riders during an event of this sort - it is Nationals, right??? I suppose there will be Oly trials coming up pretty soon, and don't know all the details of qualifying for the trials, but I gotta suspect Natz is one port of entry. I suppose I'm showing my age a bit here - I remember when the Olympics were contested by amateurs, not professionals.

OK, enough verbal spewage - LJ, your point is well taken.

Phinney really took it to all you wanna be track riders..............where was BJM?

norcalcyclingnews.com said...

uh ... Phinney is new to the track.

one of "us" roadies who have found the love of the velodrome.

and BJM did a 4:50 on a rear wheel rubbing his frame from the start.

"all you wanna be track riders"

ryyyyyyte.

Ok its football, but did you see what this guy was supposedly using?:

http://tinyurl.com/2d5eal

Do a search on the muscle head forums and youll find all sorts of stuff that they claim you wont test positive for epo/roids etc...

Better labs and researchers are needed..yes.

Phinney (is he really only 17??) says he will continue to make road his focus.

Some Track Masters do HGH and Steriods like Nick Cheneywith--now he has cancer.

So there might be some locals "on the pill"

norcalcyclingnews.com said...

"mini-phinney"

i hope he likes that nick-name, for all of us who admire his folks. and if anyone hasn't ever read their book, Training for Cycling ... pick up a copy.

good stories, good tips, good read.

and of course there are always going to be locals, young and old, who get weak and go artificial.

but, you know my motto ~ take what you want, i'll still beat you.

one way or another.

mini-phinney is no mini, but it's a good nickname...and at 17, he seems to be the next big thing...

The mass start time standard, good or bad, is not so hard for someone who is also capable of being competitive in a World Cup race. So far, the number of US riders who can make the standard is about as the number who can be competitive in the mass-start races-maybe 3 or 4 total among men and women. (check the results from 2007 Worlds) But the standard isn't the only way to get invited to WC races.

And one other thing... track riders who are good at the highest level events don't have to try to make a living on the road. Most of them make a good living doing just track stuff, so they are better at it. For US endurance track riders the track is of secondary importance for their fitness, and the sprinters have almost no means of earning a living doing just track, so they do something else.

Agree. So many local racers racing hard it's far more tangible. Even if I'm just trying to beat Griff into the ground, it's so much more meaningful than some schmoe in Europe winning some race doped to the hilt. Flandis is signed up for the Mt. Diablo Hill Challenge Sunday. He'll be stuck on top of the mountain with the riff raff and I wonder how he will be received. My only question would be, "boy the Rob Anderson smoked your ass. That has to make you want to shoot up, huh?"

More Reed sportsmanship from the first round of sprints:

Moving to women's first round

Oct 5, 2007 @ 7:41:18

Quarter final ride 1:

Jennie Reed v. Mindi Martin.

Reed is high on the track..

They roll off and Mindi Martin slides off the track. That's her second experience on the boards.

Oct 5, 2007 @ 7:43:19

Let's do this again...

Mindi goes much faster! Reed leaves a bigger gap!

Martin looks SCARED! Jennie is really a nice person!

Oct 5, 2007 @ 7:43:53

Martin does pay attention and Jennie gets the jump. She lets Mindi back in the game, but jennie cruises to the victory
