where's my geritol?

District Champyships for the old-folks this weekend at the Hellyer'Drome.

Promoter WarrenG says there are about 6 thousand entrants ... so, it's gonna be a long bit of sitting around between pedalins. Still, the time passes pretty quick when you're watching the other kids play on bikes - so should be cool n' da gang.

The weekend starts off with indi-pursuits, then moves to the team endeavors. Apparently we have enough yayhoos signed up that we're going to do the "chase-me" version of 2 on the track at the same time. I've always loved the idea of racing like that ... looking over and seeing just where your competition is.

very cool.

The Team Pursuit should be fun, could be mayhem. We BagBoys are gonna throw ourselves at it with no practice and about 7 brain cells to use between the four of us.

personally, i'll consider it a victory if we survive.

After that, we'll do the Points Races and I'm pretty sure that's going to be a vicious bit of hurt to finish off a Saturday afternoon.

blah, blah, blah ... bored with this post. movin' on.

i still have no idea what gearing i'm going to use for any of this shit.

When it doubt, "Go Big" or go home!

short is better - use an 84. That way you can skip the aerobars too.

Looking at the heats for the 3k pursuit I see Hernandez vs. Peterson.

Gearing for reasonably fast guys starts at 90 and varies up to about 95 for a guy who doesn't spin well.

The gear you use on Friday nights should be about right for most stuff. Maybe down and inch or up two inches from there at most.

Ask around. The track infield is friendlier than what you find at other bike racing venues.

doh!

Hernandez vs. Peterson!

Has a ring to it.

Looking forward to that one.

Damn. You got a good pace car. That boy actually trains for this stuff. He will be on top of it. Fuk.

really?

I'll have to keep trying then.

Although I must say, the Wednesday night B and C group was a breath of fresh air and their enthusiasm was what really encouraged me to go get a bike today.

Peterson is a hammer.

if i don't blow the start, should be a good one. i'd say even money unless he has a good day ... then, i'm toast.

experience will win that one, i reckon.

KMiller was using a 98 last Friday.

yowch.

hey Warren, what gear do you use for that flying 200m i've seen you burn?

I recall an experienced World Champ geezer once say something about having multiple gears in the legs.

This just in:
A new study suggests that human beings are given a finite number of heart beats to use during their life.

Use them wisely...

Anonymous said...

that study has been around for a while in different forms. there has even been an attempt to extrapolate this to all mammals and say that mammals only have a finite # of heartbeats and it is relatively fixed. Therefore a rat with heartbeat 30 X has 30X shorter life span. Blah, blah, and so on. Do I buy it?? Jury is out until aliens confirm it for me.

But I bet Olaf will cut a year off of his life trying to stick it to Peterson!

Although I am sure he has one of those insanely low resting heartrates to compensate....

tidbit:

my maximum HR is something like 174.

isn't that crazy low? does that mean i'll live forever?

Anonymous said...

Means you are not going hard enough!

Or constantly overtrained, which is good for the rest of us.

So your threshold is like 140?

Just wait til you are like 36 years old, then your max will really be low....

yebbut, his resting hr is like 12 or something

Ron Castia said...

No...that is his maturity age. Get straight VB. :-)

I actually played around with the math a bit on the HR thing.

Resting pulse = 40
20 hours at 40 = 48,000 beats
4 hours at say 140 = 33,600 (overly generous I think on the high side)
Total = 81,600

Ave pulse comes out to 57.

How many fat asses who don't exercise have a resting HR of 57?

Though at nationals we got to talking about former team mates and friends and the number of guys with Tachacardia (sp?) was somewhat stunning. Makes me wonder/worry if there is a connection between years of racing and tachacardia. Not enough to consider stopping though! :-)

connection between years of racing and tachycardia?

more like number of espresso shots per day ...

i'm probably gonna drop cold at 58.

with a smile on my mug.

Kevin actually meant atrial fibrillation and I had it. I had an ablation in 2003 and it cured me. Otherwise I would be going sailing and playing golf.

200 gearing? I use a bigger gear than most so I'm not a good example. On Sunday I'll use either 50x14 or 46x13 for my 200, and smaller for the sprint rounds.

dr-nitro said...

Had a team mate in 92 who passed out in the middle of a race when his heart raced through the roof from a atrial fibrillation. Luckily he was not hurt, but he did have a big battery sewed into his abdomen to shock his heart when it happened again, and he was done with the racing thang.

Scars, heart problems, head problems. Why do we do it?
