life in the Cruz ...

this morning i saw a man carrying a crucifix along the side of the road.

i'm talkin' a full-size, thickened lumber cross for the nailing ... hucked over one shoulder, dragging behind him in a long trail of sweat and determination.

and this was a sizeable man, i must tell you. walking firmly, almost striding if the weight of the damn cross wasn't such that it angled his chest slightly towards the earth and unevened the powerful pushes of his thighs.

the look on his face, clear ... stern ~ not confrontational, but definitely holding some sense of ... defiance at the observer. Perhaps it was a challenge? I don't know.

but it was a face given strength by the symbolism of his effort. he wanted to be seen - in his worker's robes, utilitarian but period specific - but there didn't appear to be a vacuuming arrogance to his demeanor ... sucking in the gawkers notice as fuel to his performance. No ~ instead, it almost seemed a chastising stare he threw out.

condemning ... what?

chastising stare? condemning?

perhaps the stare was just the look of endless effort.

and instead of condemnation it was a reminder of the sacrifices some make for others

or he just skipped his Haldol dose

i didn't get the reminder of sacrifice vibe ... i got the 'why the hell aren't you sacrificing' vibe.

lots of people carry just as big a load every day that isn't as easily visible to the naked eye

but makes more of an impression on me

That is exactly the feeling is get when I see that sort of thing.  Not "why does suffering exist", but "what are you doing to make sure it doesn't."

Seems like a waste of energy -- why try to look like Jesus when you could try to do the good things he (or the guys who wrote his bio) wanted done?

Creepy.
