down time

at work? No.

but screw that action. I'm takin' a smoke break.

Downtime ... as we prepare for the grand spectacle. The Giro has faded and we wait for the National Champions to pop up around Europe, the final signal that the Tour is ready to burst forth. Will the spry little Voeckler take back his French colors? Will the hardman Jens finally get his uber-alles jersey? And who will don the Belgium national flag ... the leader of cycling's epicenter?

But, once the Tour starts ... the true cycling world stops. Drugs? of course. Scandal? gotta have some. Yet, the Tour is a beautiful beast that rolls mad and divine across a landscape flower painted and Alp dominated.

The Tour is for the afficianado to follow and dream on. It is for the newbie to be initiated into and hooked deep by. It softens cynics, hardens seekers, and inspires us all to strive for a bit more.

just that bit more.

And so, being inspired ~ i toss aside papers and spreadsheets, freeing my mind from the clutter and focusing in on a hungry lunch workout. Yes, I'm going for a bike ride, as the co-workers say.

but it's more than that. just that bit more.

Are you going to "practice?"

That's what they ask me around these parts.

Better yet, "did you have fun?".
Response: "You see me limping, don't you? Of course it was fun."
Fun? Yeah sure, if you condsider sprinting up hill until your heart is about to explode in 105 degree heat fun, then yeah it was fun.

i just hope that there is some suspense on the road this year.

a battle between 3 or 4 of the top guys into the last week would be nice.

but i'd be happy with even a good two-horse race...

just hope that it doesn't turn into that famous "Festina Scandal" which totally ruined the beauty of the tour...

personally, i wouldn't mind it if there were a bust or three at the Tour.

i wonder who will be in tears in front of the camera's this time, proclaiming purity and hiding the needles as best they can.

Cycling has drugs. Bust 'em. Bust 'em all, i say.

they'll never all be caught ~ but might as well make a game of it and chase the stupid buggers.

i think the sport either needs to make a better commitment toward catching cheaters or stop trying altogether.

i would prefer the former.

and yeah, the drug busts don't really bother me at this point so much. the race is still a spectacle. the riders are still puttin it out there, suffering...

what is sport without scandal...if they take away the money and all the prestige that goes with winning, you get little league, but they cheat there too...
Le Tour is still full of suspense, intrigue, pain, and suffering just like a good trashy novel...bring it on...
