the three R's
"just because you can attack ...
doesn't mean you have to"
Yeah, those words took a while to settle into the brainbasket. Learning how to read bike races is sort of like learning how to have sex ~ at first, you have no idea what's going on and think the best thing you can do is pound away and sweat a lot.
Then, after a few years of flailing about ~ you slow down and start paying attention to the subtleties and nuances that make the endeavor so gratifying for everyone involved. Eventually, you come to a point where you honestly can't remember ever not knowing how to do it.

When a bunch of teams get all hornet-y and swarm over the front of a race ... that just sends my stinger straight-like in anticipation. There is little more satisfying in cycling than a bunch of yahoos throwin' down wild in a race. And when there is method to the madness? ... well, that just shoots me over the moon.
Tactics ~ those are the undercurrents of cycling that hold invisible control over the perceived mayhem of the surface. It is the afficianodos and generalisimos who draw so much enjoyment from the sport and stick with it the longest. They love to move the chess pieces, call deep on the horns of battle, rally forth in protection, attack, and plunder.
All the evil joys of war ... with no bloodshed.
Get on your bike and save the world.

Interesting stuff.
I am in the attack all the time phase of my cycling career. I attack every race. Maybe I need to mellow out, but it is fun.
Oh, number of times any attack by anyone has lead to a successful break in my last 30 races: 1 (Yes, I am a Cat. 4. Please, just a few more points!)
oh ... i attack every race, too.
It's knowing when to attack that was the hardest (is the hardest?) lesson.
most geezer races end up in breaks. most that i'm in, anyway.
Yeah, you guys put the hammer down in a vicious and uncompromising way.
Assuming I cat up to three this year, I plan on trying to race with the 35+ 1/2/3 group. Not sure if it makes sense to race in Elite 3s.
I can feel my spleen bursting already.
Geezers racing is the best-est.
It's an addiction, and the older I get the more I want..... of both :)
OV, again dropping knowledge. I'm getting there. I'm feeling like yepper, the WHEN is starting to come to me. Just starts to ooze in all natural.
Hmm, what got deleted? Sex-talk, I bet.
Yo DiskZero, just wait for the 3rd or 4th blast from us sportie EMCers and go with that, we never never seem to get the help we need. And stop pulling all the time, you'll be fresher & make it stick. I think that was you at the EBRR...
Affectionately, another career cat4, RacerX
prolly was sex-talk. but i didn't catch it.
dang, i hate it when that happens.
