le ouch

anybody remember a stage in year's back TourdeFrance annals when a domestique was up the road on a hilltop finish after sitting on the break all day?

From this year's Giro (via CN.com):

18:00 CEST The crowd is amazing up here. Cunego still chases Basso and Simoni solo. Garate still leads up front. 400m to go after 224 km of racing. Garate goes ahead. Voigt doesn't contest the sprint. Garate takes the win and rides across the road and points back at Voigt thanking him.

Turned out a wee bit different then, didn't it.

but ... the Tour isn't the Giro.

Then again, class is class.

apparently, when Jens was over here doin' the TofCali ~ he was shocked by all the signs and yahoos for him over here.

he didn't realize how popular he is over here.

hope he has more of an idea now.

So... Next time I get into a break with a Safeway guy... All I need to do is take more pulls and he'll let me win?

Cool!

:-)

The cynical side of me thinks that maybe it had more to do with favors promised or something like that. These guys get paid to win and you don't give away something like a Giro stage win because you're a nice guy.

Garate?

Don't think there's much Garate could offer CSC or Jensy.

Olaf sez: "never get dropped from the break. Ever."

Why you gotta sweat George for doing what he was supposed to do? If he's the weaker rider, but he still wins, he's doing something right, no? A big ol' dude like that winning a mountain stage... heck yeah he's going to be doing as little as he can!

Contrast with Hincapie teammate Hoste, getting a gap, then giving the world champ some big assed pulls at Flanders. Were I Hoste, the lil' Olaf on my shoulder woulda been saying "you've got a gap, now sit on him and make him keep it."

Yeah, yeah, a GT stage and a classic are different beasts, so back to the Q at hand, I guess I don't see why one non-GC contender ought to give a stage away to another. I mean, I guess it's cool if he does, but if he doesn't, well that's cool too.

hey ~ you got all the rope at Berkeley you should ever be allowed.

took all 12 cyclinders for DanO to reel your ass in.

besides, i've haven't seen you sit-on a move ... ever. I think it would violate your genetic make-up.

S-DOG ~ remember, Jensy AND Georgie had both been sitting on their respective breaks for very LONG days.

Hilltop finish for a bigman, or no ... sitting on a break is saving a damn ton of energy.

You're in the break and able to sit on because of your teammie's yellow jersey. Let the other teams get their gold, too ... that's my motto.

share, honor, suffering.

as for Hoste ... he's just an idiot.

Whats sitting on and how do I learn such a tactic?

I don't know OV, I was shocked and disappointed when Jens let him go. Mercks says never give anything away right? And that's just part of racing if you have benefit of sitting in. Jens is on the team supporting Basso no? So he helped earn and create the situation that allowed him to sit in all day. He still had to do the work to stay with the climbers at the end. He should have contested the win. I'm disappointed he didn't win.

as i've heard said, the world is round, and it all comes around.

i suppose it's about the cost of victory, you dig?

i like winning, i wanna win ... but there are somethings more beautiful than the win.

what jens did today was beautiful. and though he did not get the glories of the blue ribbon, he will be rewarded.

Garate drove that break all day, then drove the approach to the climb something fierce. if i'd a been in Jens' shoes, i'da tipped my hat to him, too.

code.

mcSassy only sits in when the vino's flowin'.

he lets others do all the pourin' they want.

That I can do.

I'm thinking beer run after Hamli'ton I'll buy.

Garate will pay Jens back when he can, bank on it.

I know I would.
