Oh, sorry to hear that! We were wondering why we never saw you after the start yesterday. Heal up fast!

...from velodrome folks...rest and heal up. We'll see you racing again after 'cross... or typical for you, probably sooner.

norcalcyclingnews.com said...

thanks for the well wishes, ya'll.

i've got about an 8-minute window before the percoset drops the bomb on my ass ... and 1-handed typing is cramping my thought-to-keyboard action.

anyway, 3 drips of morphine did nothing for "pain management" last nite in the ER. i guess all those years of hard living built up an immunity.

The shoulder is a bit of a bitch, but manageable. But man, this left calf is done for. I'm worried about this fucker. Broken bones and surgery? ... meh, no problem. But this much damage to soft tissue kind of has my butt itching. i'm sure it will turn out fine ... but, fukkal - that's some pain.

what a wuss.

anyway, SA ... that's bloody hilarious. thanks for the giggle, though it did grate the bones against each other something stupid.

Gotta thank Pasco, MikeM, and Ron for stopping after the crash, as well as the 2 or 3 other racers who did so. I know one of them was a guy i've raced against a lot and is a fierce-ass competitor. It was pretty awesome that he threw the race to the floor and wanted to make sure i was ok.

i'll find out who it was and thank him.

Also want to thank a couple of 3rd Pillar riders who helped me out huge with the transport to Reg so i could get my ass in sputnik and get home.

and thanks to Ryan Hostetter, our lil' ninja, for pushing Sputnik to the edge to get my carcass to Santa Cruz and the ER.

and especial thanks to my woman - who spent 8 hours in the ER, tracking down a cane for me, offering to help me pee in a cup (uh, no thanks honey ... i need to keep some romance in the relationship), fighting the Walgreen weirdness for something called percoset which i have now come to call "dream o slap".

i'm a lucky man.

and thanks to my pals Soni and Jeff. I'm missing you both right now.

Anyway, it's not that bad of injuries. There was about an hour when they were worried that the calf would go bad and we'd need surgery to relieve the swelling and maybe there would be some toxicity from the muscle damage - but, it's all good in the hood.

and the collarbone is broken at the distal bit, with a 3rd degree separation of something - but, i wasn't really listening. i'll have surgery later this week and they'll do whatever they need to do. blah, blah, blah.

bottom line, i'll use a bit of vacation/sick time from work, rest a bit, try like hell to not have any calf atrophy, do my best to be a good man to the woman, remember my friends and honor them, and start getting ready for cross.

hernando out ... meds kicking in.

another tidbit of advice:

don't sneeze

and pabcid's got extra percocet if you need it--that stuff did nothing for him at all, if you can believe it, so we had to switch to something else

PAB(a.k.a.CID) said...

3 drops did nothing?

then, did they give you 30?

cus in that photo, you looks like you is feelin no pain, brudda...

missin you too man.

Sufferin' P said...

Sorry to see you go down like that, but thanks for falling to the left. ;) You must've been distracted by those fancy wheels Pasco was running.

Also sorry to see some knuckleheads attacking 45s after you crashed while the field was still neutral. Chased them down and wagged the finger - definite lack of class, even if the almighty CalCup is on the line.

heal up.

Velo Bella said...

oops, my linkie didn't work. And I don't even have percoset to blame.

It looks like this

When the xray tech flipped it up on the board for me, I couldn't believe it. Yep, exactly like Jeff's. I remembered Soni's little anatomy lesson and even told the xray tech, "wow, look at that seperation right here"

As eerie as it is to have Jeff and Michael both out at the same time with the exact same injury, we have to leave it to the ONE guy in the 35+ who failed to see Michael in time to avoid him and gave Michael an unJeff injury. He ramrodded at 30+mph, straight into Michael's calf as if it were nothing but a cute tan bot dott.

That calf is what had the er all worried last night and what brought the ortho out from his barbecue or whatever (he was in flip flops and smelled like a bonfire). Compartment syndrome, which I had only heard about in motocoss racers. Turns out Michael just has huge calves, made even huger by the swelling. And years of running has given him some thick ass tib/fibs that tacoed some dude's wheel without breaking.

Although there are no broken bones, his right lower leg is in a light cast and Michael cant really put weight on it. They were gonna give Michael crutches, but uh..thats not going to work as its on the same side as the broken wing. So I picked him up a cane at the 24 hour pharmacy.

Driving around for percoset at 10:00 on a Sunday night is an adventure too. Finally found out that there is one 24 hour pharmacy in all of Cruz county. Walgreens in Watsonville. The place was totally jumping. Apparently, this is where everyone goes on a Saturday night. Aisles were packed, kids were playing eveywhere, guys playing guitar outside, and me looking for a cane.

I wanted to get Michael one of those pimp daddy canes with the big ass lion head or something, but could only find plain canes. That was kind of a bummer. Its not often you get an excuse to use a cane, and if you are gonna use one, you might as well go pimp.

And it took about 4 hours in the er before they even gave Michael his first morphine shot. Although I told eveyone I saw, "he hasnt had pain relief yet" "he hasnt had pain relief yet". Michael just doesn't show pain well. But I know what those crossed eyebrows and tight jaw mean. Finally, MIchael spoke up and said he was in pain. Then the nurse finally listened.

Gave him a shot of morphine and it did nothing. I would have been out and snoring like the lady in the room next door. So they gave Michael the legal limit of one shot every 15 minutes and I think the third finally made him a little sleepy. Either that or Michael was bonking.

Thankfully, Ryan, Tyler and Barret had dinner waiting for us at the house. They even did the dishes in the wee hours this morning before they left for Suisun. Thanks guys because my dishwasher is broken for a bit.

And I can't believe we got a room with a gigantic George Hincapie poster in it. That at least made Michael giggle a little.

And while we were there, someone was transported to the er in a helicopter and there were people crying in the hallway so there's that perspective check to give you a little more patience.

And except for the RN who was too overworked to remember to stop and give him pain relief, Michael got much better care than his last experience there. We got some er doc who is a runner and competitive power lifter and has a soft spot for athletes so he kept checking in on us. He said people talk about athletics being dangerous, but based on what he sees everyday in his work, there is nothing more dangerous than a sedentary lifestyle. And if you do go participating in sports, at least you go in glory.

Amen.

I'm so, so sorry about this. Injuries suck. I have some canes (one's even a bit pimped out), percocet, knee braces (you won't be needing those), crutches, etc. if you need anything. Seriously, let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Compartment Syndrome?
I wonder if it is a catch all phrase of sorts.
One of my teammates suffers from it and has kept him from really getting beck to the level of his former youth racing years. He experiences it in his quads causing him to need and hour and half warm up before he can tolerate the pain of any hard efforts.
Let's hope you don't have that, the cure is illusive.

Don't down play your injuries, you don't need to rush back into racing and screw up your future racing. We are geezers from here on, ain't nothin gonna change that ever. Geezer today, geezer a year from now.

Michael-So sorry to hear about your crash/injuries! Hang in there, don't go stingy on the pain meds, and just rest. Your leg will heal, and your shoulder will, too. (I had the same shoulder thing last year--grade 3 and distal fracture) You're lucky to have Sabine to help you out...Best of luck. And Sabine...remember to do things for yourself, too! Nursing is hard work! I'm sure Michael appreciates it all which definitely helps.

And, Michael, wow, sounds like you've got some calf...if it tacoed the guy's wheel who had the nerve to run into you! We should have been measuring calves all this time...when we were stuck on quads!

Cruddy circumstance. A lot of good wishes going your way for a fast as possible ticket outta shitsville.

I went back to the post because I forgot to check the title for the picture of you in the hospital bed. No title, which is understandable given the circumstance. But who else except you would wind up in a hospital bed with a painting of a bike racer hanging on the wall behind him? Again, my best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Yo, dude!

It takes awhile for news to reach this side of the mountain.

Good to hear you had an understanding doctor. Last year when I spent the afternoon at the fabulous King City ER with Micah,
we had this guy who wanted to talk
bikes and such...that was cool 'cept for the fact that he weighed about 325lbs and couldn't decide if he wanted the Tarmac or the Giant TCR!

Funny stuff, indeed.

Yeah, enjoy those fun meds. Remember, some people pay BIG money
for that stuff AND, as they say,"Time heals all wounds." Of course, I still prefer Speedplay over Time but that's just me.

We'll keep you in our prayers and
see you next year.
