i hate the center line rule, but as someone who followed the rule when I raced, it makes me sad that people still question it even though they know its there.
If it were a concrete wall instead of paint would they crash into it?
I was at the race a few years back when the rider was hit head on because he crossed the centerline. It's a reality even if its at the finish. Cars drive through finish lines all the time especially when you have a pimple faced kid standing in the road with an orange vest directing traffic. NO one cares.. I have been there directing traffic and speaking from experience.
The silverton road race crash up here in Oregon the other week was on a fast downhill descent on a center line restricted course. I heard constant loud mouthing how they should close the road, rather than how they should avoid clustering on a downhill.
An alternative for some races might be to turn the race off into a parking lot or a private drive.

1. Interesting potential correlary between doping and mental illness. Would be interesting to see whether that andecdote plays out. Though I suspect it's just a matter of degrees... we're all risk takers after all, else we'd be home on the couch like everyone else, not bombing mountain roads in a leotard with a beer cooler hat.
2. Safety or no, centerline infractions compromise race permits.

But the part about the small time race and small time officials really struck me.
arrogant.
transparent.
and completely disappointing.
The problem is that officials exercise discretion, which leads to people think that the discretion applies to them. The rule is there for safety and permit purposes. Those are areas where discretion should not apply. Dylan's rant against small town officials could easily be turned against him for not seeing the big picture about how violating that rule poses a threat to him and the race. Additionally, has he ever officiated. Again, officials should not have, and generally don't want, a great deal of discretion. Nothing would ever get done if they did, and everybody would be pissed for what would look like arbitrary applications of rules.
If you are coming up on dropped riders, then it should be no different than you coming up on a breakaway on a narrow finish line. If there is no room, there is no room, and you are stuck where you are.
That said, let's not resort to spitting at each other, OV.

I like the guy, like that he is around and isn't too nose in the air to not ride with us. He has seen it all and still finds a place for us when it is all said and done. You don't see that often amongst people from his level and era.
So I guess I reserved judgment based on the relationship I have with him, but I do see where he is coming from. But I also see why he was relegated and well we all get the dirty end of the stick from time to time and fly off the handle in our own way because of it (Dunuba as an example)....
After he gives you his skewed opinions on officiating he does admit that no matter your feelings on the rules, make sure you are following the rules.. no matter how good your excuse is or who you are... not a bad lesson to learn in a totally unfair world.....

On a side note...the Pescadero Road Race is by far one of the best road races in the country and should be a much bigger event given that it's the type of course that will really prepare Juniors and U23 for going to Europe.

A lot of us have been talking about how this race should really find a way on the NRC calendar....
I know there was talk with a TT and Burlingame crit in the past as a SR omnium. But it really should have something because it is hands down one of the hardest courses around and could be so lethal with the right field....
my panties are in a bunch because of his disdain and arrogance towards our promoters and officials, not because he yellow-lined it to win a bike race.
though, i am a proponent of disqualifications for egregious advancing over the yellow, not relegations.

Maybe Pros shouldn't race in amateur fields and events. If you are a pro, race the pro 1/2. If you are retired, then retire...

I'm certain that my view is tempered by knowing Dylan when he was a college kid at UCSB, but I'm not standing up for his statement about small town officials. He's wrong. But my point is that this is a matter where reason can be used. Spitting only leads to that stupid Trexler track crap that you posted about.

I read that as a somewhat subtle insult to some of our officials who aren't particularly small in a physical sense.

officiating is more taxing, less glamorous, and way less fun than racing...ask a racer to give up their day officating and see how many you get...I count maybe four in nor cal-not a lot...
Agreed DC is an ass, always has been always well. I can comment from multiple experiences. Anyone that trains around here has a DC is an A hole story. Proof is in the pudding, or in the douche bag.......if you will hmmmmm.....ick
I was DQed from 3rd at Leesville for this offense last year and I was PLEADING to be relegated. Nope, I was listed DNF.
I was also in a break and drifted over the line after sitting up. I had gone too early and was passed by two and was too cooked to realize where I was.
I would have been happy to be relagated! I never asked to keep my 3rd.
