while young and lamb-like ... there were days spent running wild through blasted Dakota lands. it was during those maturing ages of AIM, still flush with battle, but already beginning the slow assimilating decline into "annual gatherings."
but warriors still roamed ... swinging fists in bars, beating chests in markets, sauntering defiant through the Sears Roebuck. and we urchins watched and wondered and dismissed it as shit to avoid as we scampered and kicked around loose trinkets scrounged from abandoned trailers, cars, sofas and other things bought, abused, discarded. there was no color amongst us ... that i knew of. but i was brown and long-haired - like the rest of them - so maybe that doesn't mean much.
there was no color amongst us but the cold dark of home and the bright, alive of away.
away and free from the nasty battles of men scratching bloody at each other, clawing for dominance of a stinking, shrinking cage.

getting that pepper spray out looks rather painful and it doesn't sound like protesters were able to get off any good statements. Not much point to the whole ruckus.
A gradeless UCSC system makes some have w-a-y too much time on their hands.

That's pretty funny. That quote about wishing that they'd have showed up at the public comment period cuz we don't actually know what they are protesting over (nukes? humanities? cuz that hot chick from across the hall said we should go stick it to the man?) cracked me up.
Like a mini WTO protest... sure there are some folks with political conviction, but there are also a bunch of hangers on who think that if you grow a beard like Che and throw rocks at Starbucks that you're stickin' it to the Man.
"Resist Coporate Coffee" ... vote with your dollar...

Curious -- who is in fear, the people baracading the building or those stuck inside? Or... think of a couple of farmers strategically placing some farm equipment on the road during a bike race so as to disrupt it. Cuz they hate you spamdex mfers and nobody listens to the plight of the grumpy farmer. Stickin' it to The Man is all good, till you're the man getting stuck.

Physical protests like this one don't seem to accomplish much these days. They often turn violent, and then neither side (the protesters, or the man) comes off looking good. So rarely are minds changed.
I think LJ is on it--we live in a capitalist system. Economic boycott is a difficult and probably slow way to get a point across and/or maybe even cause a change--but at least it is non-violent.

Nah, just as someone who has participated in the thankless nature of minor governments, it annoys me to no end when people want to protest instead of participate. Chanting and scaring people for an afternoon isn't going to change a thing... in fact, it's just lazy. But if they'd have had to sit down and figure out the rules of the game (i.e. that they actually had the power to force the regents to listen) they wouldn't have made it home in time for the afternoon bong load.
True participation is time consuming and the impact is glacial. Welcome to democracy.

Glacial change. It's slow, but it's huge. Mojito, you and I are entirely on the same page. My problem isn't with people making themselves a PITA to achieve change -- really that's often required (think Boston tea party). I'm just projecting my disappointment with people who don't bother learning how the system works before they go get themselves tear gassed. Political soccer hooligans don't really know what cause they're committed to.
